Citrus!
Citrus is the ideal winter fruit! With a season from November to April you can find great variety, some of my favorites are meyer lemon, blood orange, cara cara, and satsuma mandarin. Citrus are a great source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that supports our immune system, essential in the synthesis of collagen (used to form bone and blood vessels), and is antiviral and antibacterial.
The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which provides adequate intake for the average adult should be 90mg of vitamin C per day. A large navel orange contains 80mg, grapefruits contain 38mg, and lemons contain 30mg.
My daughter loves to juice citrus, and make 'special' drinks for herself, brother, friends, and family. She came up with this one over the holidays and it was a hit!
Packed with 246mg of vitamin C, it was a great drink to enjoy and share. Here's the recipe:
JUICE:
2 orages (valencia oranges are great for juicing)
1 clementine
1 lime
1 meyer lemon
ADD:
1 tsp of maple syrup
Stir, pour into fancy glasses, and enjoy!
For an adult drink try with tequila...
